Best AI Coding Agents (Sep 2026): 10 Coding Agents Compared
The best AI coding agents on 29 Sep 2026: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, OpenCode, Cline and more, compared by licence, price and where they run.

As of 29 Sep 2026, the best AI coding agents are Claude Code for terminal work, Cursor for work inside an editor, Codex if you already pay for ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot for teams that live on GitHub, and OpenCode or Cline if you want open source with your own model keys.
Two things changed since this list first ran in June. Google shut free, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra access to Gemini CLI on 18 Jun 2026, and GitHub moved Copilot to token based billing on 1 Jun 2026. Both are in the table below.
What is an AI coding agent?
An AI coding agent is a program that takes a task in plain language and works on your code until the task is done. It reads files, edits them, runs shell commands and tests, reads the output, and loops. That loop is the difference from autocomplete, which suggests the next line and waits for you.
The model does the thinking; the agent is the harness that gives it hands, which is why the same model can feel very different in two agents.
The best AI coding agents compared (checked 29 Sep 2026)
Every row was checked against the vendor’s own page on 29 Sep 2026. Model names in this space go stale faster than milk in the break room fridge, so the table names plans and surfaces, not models.
| Agent | Made by | Open source | How you pay | Where it runs | Standout strength |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Anthropic | No (public repo, no open licence) | Any paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) or an API key | Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop app, web | Long autonomous sessions with subagents, hooks and skills |
| Codex | OpenAI | CLI yes (Apache 2.0) | Every ChatGPT plan including Free, or an API key | Terminal, IDE extension, desktop app, cloud | Included in ChatGPT, local and cloud in one tool |
| Cursor (editor and Cursor CLI) | Anysphere, owned by SpaceX since 14 Aug 2026 | No | Hobby (free), Individual, Teams; included usage, then on demand | Cursor editor, terminal, cloud agents | The most polished agent inside an editor, models from several labs |
| GitHub Copilot (agent mode, cloud agent, Copilot CLI) | GitHub | No | Free plan; paid plans include GitHub AI Credits | VS Code and other IDEs, github.com, terminal | Assign an issue, get a pull request built in GitHub Actions |
| OpenCode | Anomaly | Yes (MIT) | Free; bring keys or subscriptions from 75+ providers, or OpenCode Zen | Terminal, desktop app, IDE | Widest model choice, local models included |
| Cline | Cline | Yes (Apache 2.0) | Free for individuals; pay for inference with your own keys or through Cline | VS Code, CLI, JetBrains (enterprise only) | Open source agent inside stock VS Code |
| Aider | Paul Gauthier and contributors | Yes (Apache 2.0) | Free; your own API keys | Terminal | Git native, commits every change it makes |
| Gemini CLI | Yes (Apache 2.0) | Paid Gemini API key, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI), or Code Assist Standard or Enterprise | Terminal | Open source, now aimed at Google Cloud customers | |
Antigravity CLI (agy) |
No (binary, public issue tracker) | Free Individual tier with weekly limits, Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra | Terminal, plus the Antigravity IDE | Google’s replacement for Gemini CLI for individuals | |
| Devin | Cognition | No | Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise; daily and weekly usage allowance | Cloud, desktop app, CLI | Hand off a whole task and review the pull request |

Aider deserves a flag. Its last release is 0.86.2, published to PyPI on 12 Feb 2026, and the repo’s last push was in May 2026. It still works, but check its pulse before you standardise a team on it. Aider vs Claude Code has the longer comparison.
Which coding agent should you pick?
Pick by where you work and what you already pay for, not by a leaderboard.
- Pick Claude Code if you work in the terminal and hand the agent long, multi file tasks. Codex CLI vs Claude Code covers the head to head.
- Pick Munder Difflin if you want to run several of these at once, free and open source. It is not a coding agent itself. It is a desktop app that runs seven of the ten tools in this table side by side (all but Cline, Aider and Devin), with an orchestrator you brief, and it is MIT licensed.
- Pick Cursor if you want the agent inside your editor with the least setup. See Claude Code vs Cursor.
- Pick Codex if you already have ChatGPT. Every plan includes it, even Free.
- Pick GitHub Copilot if your team’s issues and reviews already live on GitHub.
- Pick OpenCode if you want open source and the freedom to swap models, local ones included.
- Pick Cline if you want an open source agent that stays in VS Code.
- Pick Devin if you want to delegate a bounded task and come back to a pull request.
We gave seven coding agents the same bug
Run on 29 Sep 2026 on a Mac: every agent CLI installed got the same file and prompt, once each, in a fresh temp folder. The file, average.py:
def average(nums):
"""Return the mean of a non-empty list."""
total = 0
for i in range(len(nums) - 1):
total += nums[i]
return total / len(nums)
print(average([2, 4, 6])) # expected 4.0
The prompt, word for word:
Read average.py in this folder. It has one bug. Name the bug and the one line fix. Do not edit any file. Answer in two sentences.
We used each tool’s non interactive mode (claude -p, codex exec, gemini -p, opencode run, cursor-agent -p, copilot -p, agy -p), with plan or read only mode where the CLI has one.
| Agent | --version output |
Ran without a login prompt | Wall clock | Found the bug |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | 2.1.284 (Claude Code) |
Yes | 17.5 s | Yes, range(len(nums)) |
| Antigravity CLI | 1.2.12 |
Yes | 26.5 s | Yes, same fix |
| GitHub Copilot CLI | GitHub Copilot CLI 1.0.88. |
Yes | 26.9 s | Yes, same fix |
| OpenCode | 1.18.30 |
Yes, but the saved OpenAI key was rejected; rerun on the free opencode/big-pickle model |
9.8 s on the free model | Yes, same fix |
| Gemini CLI | 0.46.0 |
Yes (Gemini API key), after --skip-trust for the new folder |
168.9 s, including two 503 “high demand” retries | Yes, same fix |
| Cursor Agent | 2026.09.23-86fc751 |
Yes, after --trust for the new folder |
n/a | Not tested: our own Cursor account was at its usage limit |
| Codex | codex-cli 0.153.4 |
Yes (API key login) | n/a | Not tested: our own OpenAI API key had no credits |
| Aider, Cline, Devin | Not installed on this Mac | Not run | Not run | Not run |
No agent edited the file; we diffed each copy afterwards. The bug was easy on purpose, so this is a smoke test of setup and access, not a ranking. Cursor and Codex were not tested because our own accounts were out of usage, which says nothing about either tool, and two needed a trust flag before they would run in a new folder.
Which AI coding agents are free?
Five have a free tier, and four open source agents cost nothing but the model. On 29 Sep 2026, Codex came with ChatGPT Free, Copilot, Cursor, Devin and Antigravity CLI each had a free tier, and Claude Code needed a paid Claude plan or API credit.
The entry paid tiers on 29 Sep 2026, from each vendor’s pricing page: Claude Pro $20 a month, ChatGPT Go $8 and Plus $20 a month, Copilot Pro $10 a month, Cursor Individual $20 a month and Devin Pro $20 a month. OpenCode, Cline, Aider and Gemini CLI are free software; the bill is whatever your model provider charges.
Copilot’s billing has a catch worth knowing. Since GitHub’s switch to usage based billing on 1 Jun 2026, agent mode, the cloud agent and Copilot CLI draw from monthly AI Credits, while completions stay unlimited on paid plans. Long agent sessions burn credits faster than chat.
Which coding agents are open source?
Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Cline and Aider are open source; Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Antigravity CLI and Devin are not. OpenCode is MIT licensed and the other four are Apache 2.0, per their GitHub repos on 29 Sep 2026.
Claude Code confuses people here because its GitHub repo is public. The repo carries no open source licence and the product is used under Anthropic’s terms. Is Claude Code open source walks through the detail.
What is the best coding agent for VS Code?
For VS Code, Copilot is the default, Cline is the best open source pick, and Claude Code and Codex both ship VS Code extensions. Cursor is a fork of VS Code, so it counts too if you are happy to switch editors.
What happened to Gemini CLI?
Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for individual users on 18 Jun 2026, per the transition notice in the Gemini CLI repo dated 19 May 2026. Free, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra users lost access. Gemini CLI itself stays open source and still works with a paid API key, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (the new name for Vertex AI since April 2026) or a Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence. If you are an individual, install agy instead.
Can you run several coding agents at once?
Yes, and plenty of people do: Claude Code on one feature, Codex reviewing another, Copilot’s cloud agent on a bug. The rule is one git worktree per agent, or two agents will edit the same file and one of them loses.
You can do this by hand with git worktree add and a terminal tab per agent. Munder Difflin does the same thing for you. As of 0.5.3 (checked in src/shared/agentProvider.ts at the v0.5.3 tag), it runs twelve CLIs: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Antigravity, Grok, Kimi Code, Qwen, OpenCode, Crush, Pi, Copilot and Cursor. Each worker gets its own worktree (src/main/git.ts), and Michael, the orchestrator you brief, hands out the tasks.

It does not replace any agent above. You still install each CLI and sign in with your own plan or key, and it will not make a weak model write better code. If you only ever run one agent, you do not need it. For setup, start with how to install and use Munder Difflin; for other ways to run agents in parallel, see the best multi-agent tools for Claude Code.

FAQ
What is the best AI coding agent right now?
As of 29 Sep 2026, Claude Code is the strongest pick for terminal work and Cursor for work inside an editor. Codex is the best value if you already pay for ChatGPT, and GitHub Copilot fits teams that live on GitHub. OpenCode and Cline are the best open source picks.
Is there a free AI coding agent?
Yes. Codex works on the ChatGPT Free plan, GitHub Copilot has a Free plan, Cursor has a free Hobby plan, Devin has a Free plan, and Antigravity CLI has a free Individual tier with weekly limits, all checked on 29 Sep 2026. OpenCode, Cline and Aider are free open source software, though you still pay for the model you connect.
Can I still use Gemini CLI for free?
No. Google stopped serving free, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra users in Gemini CLI on 18 Jun 2026 and moved individuals to Antigravity CLI, invoked as agy. Gemini CLI stays open source under Apache 2.0 and still works with a paid Gemini API key, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI) or a Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence.
What is the difference between an AI coding agent and an AI coding assistant?
An assistant suggests code and waits for you. An agent takes a task, then reads files, edits them, runs commands and tests, and repeats until the task is done or it needs a decision. Most tools now do both: Copilot and Cursor still autocomplete, and both also run agent sessions.
Can I run Claude Code and Codex at the same time?
Yes. Run each in its own git worktree so they never edit the same checkout. You can do that by hand with git worktree add and a few terminal tabs, or use Munder Difflin, which gives every agent its own worktree and supports twelve coding CLIs.
