Claude Code vs Cursor: Which Is Better in 2026?
Claude Code vs Cursor, checked 29 Sep 2026: a dated table of models, plans, background agents, MCP and licences, then when to pick each or run both.

Pick Cursor if you want an AI editor where you steer agents across models from several labs, and pick Claude Code if you want Anthropic’s terminal agent to take whole tasks on the Claude plan you already pay for.
There is a third answer: run both. Munder Difflin, free and open source, runs a Claude Code agent and a Cursor Agent side by side in one desktop app, each in its own terminal on your machine. More on that below. If you already pay for Max, our Claude Code Max plan tips cover how the limits behave.

Pick Cursor if, pick Claude Code if, use both if
Pick Cursor if you want to read every diff in an editor, like Tab completion while you type, or want Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok behind one picker. Pick it too if you want agents that keep working in the cloud while your laptop is shut, or you want to try before paying.
Pick Claude Code if you already pay for Claude, prefer describing a task and reviewing the result, or live in a terminal. Claude models cost you plan usage here, while in Cursor’s picker they bill at API rates.
Use both if you like Cursor’s editor but want Claude Code doing the long jobs. That is a common setup, and there are three ways to wire it, covered below.
Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
Neither wins outright, and the better pick depends on how much of the typing you want to keep.
In Cursor you tend to stay on the code: the agent sits next to the file you have open and its edits land where you can see them. In Claude Code you tend to stay on the task: you write a sentence, it plans, edits across files, runs commands and, per Anthropic’s overview, “stages changes, writes commit messages, creates branches, and opens pull requests.” Both have skills, hooks, subagents and MCP now, so the gap is posture more than features.

Which is cheaper, Claude Code or Cursor?
Both start at $20 a month (claude.com and cursor.com, checked 29 Sep 2026), so the real difference is what happens when usage runs out.
A Claude plan caps Claude Code with a five hour session limit and a weekly limit. On 14 Sep 2026 the weekly limit settled at 125% of its pre-May baseline for Pro, Max, Team and seat based Enterprise, down from a temporary 150%. Anthropic’s ClaudeDevs account announced the permanent 25% raise, and Anthropic later called the change a 17% cut from the boosted level, as BleepingComputer reported on 29 Aug 2026. Hit it and you wait, or turn on usage credits.
Cursor’s models and pricing docs, checked 29 Sep 2026, split each paid plan into two pools that reset monthly. The Cursor Models pool covers Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5 with much more included usage. The Other Models pool covers everything else at that model’s API price. The same page puts daily agent users at $60 to $100 a month in total usage (checked 29 Sep 2026), which is why Cursor’s own FAQ recommends Pro+ for them. India gets a Start plan at ₹649 a month with the Cursor Models pool only (checked 29 Sep 2026).
So if Claude models are what you want all day, a Claude plan usually stretches further. If you are happy on Grok or Composer, Cursor’s included pool is generous.
Which models can you use in Claude Code and Cursor?
Cursor gives you a picker across labs; Claude Code gives you Claude. Claude Code’s model configuration docs resolve opus to Opus 5.5 and sonnet to Sonnet 5.5 on the Anthropic API, and fable to Fable 5.1 where Fable is available to you. On Bedrock and other clouds the aliases can point at older models, so check the table on that page. Cursor’s docs list “frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, SpaceXAI, and more”, with Grok and Composer in its own pool, and a Claude model picked there bills from the Other Models pool.
Does Cursor have a CLI like Claude Code?
Yes. Cursor’s CLI docs install it with curl https://cursor.com/install -fsS | bash and start it with agent, where Claude Code’s is claude. It has the editor’s Agent, Plan and Ask modes, a print mode (agent -p "...") for scripts and CI, and a handoff: start a message with & and the conversation moves to a Cloud Agent that keeps going while you’re away.
Do Claude Code and Cursor have background agents?
Both do, and Cursor’s run further from your machine. Cursor’s Cloud Agents run in isolated VMs with your repo, dependencies and secrets; its docs say you can run as many as you want in parallel, and the Agents Window moves an agent between local and cloud. Claude Code’s claude agents view (a research preview) dispatches and tracks background sessions on your machine, each in its own worktree before it edits files. Cloud sessions run on claude.ai/code, and Projects, in public beta on Pro and Max, let Claude start and track parallel cloud threads for you. Agent teams, a lead with teammates that message each other, stay off until you set CLAUDE_CODE_EXPERIMENTAL_AGENT_TEAMS=1.

Can you use Claude Code and Cursor together?
Yes, and there are three sensible ways to do it.
- Claude Code inside Cursor. Anthropic’s overview has an “Install for Cursor” link for the Claude Code extension. You keep Cursor’s editor and bill the agent work to your Claude plan.
- Munder Difflin, both CLIs from one app. Every agent you hire picks its own engine and model, so a Claude Code agent and a Cursor Agent (say on
composer-2.5) work side by side, each in a real terminal, optionally in its own git worktree, on subscriptions you already pay for. If Cursor’s CLI is missing, the app installs it with Cursor’s own script. Checked in the v0.5.3 release source (src/shared/agentProvider.ts,src/shared/hire.ts). One honest limit: there is no Cursor hook bridge yet, so a Cursor agent gets messages typed into its terminal when it goes quiet, while Claude Code reports live status through hooks. It drives Cursor’s CLI, not its editor or cloud agents. - By hand. Open two terminals and give each agent its own worktree, for example
claude -w authin one andagent -w uiin the other. Two agents in one checkout is how you get a merge conflict with yourself.

Is Claude Code or Cursor open source?
Neither is. The anthropics/claude-code repository holds issues, plugins and examples, but its licence file reads “All rights reserved” under Anthropic’s Commercial Terms (checked 29 Sep 2026). Cursor’s editor, CLI and cloud agents are proprietary. If an open licence matters to you, the orchestration layer can be open even when the agents are not: Munder Difflin’s classic office is MIT licensed.
Claude Code or Cursor for beginners?
Cursor is the easier start. Its Hobby plan needs no credit card (cursor.com/pricing, 29 Sep 2026), and you watch every change land in a file you can see. Claude’s Free plan does not include Claude Code, so trying it means a paid plan or API credits. Claude Code’s hands off style pays off once you know what a good diff looks like.
FAQ
Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
Neither is better for everyone. Cursor suits you if you want an editor, read each change and switch between models from several labs. Claude Code suits you if you already pay for Claude and prefer to hand over a whole task and review the result.
Can I use my Claude subscription inside Cursor?
Yes, through Anthropic's Claude Code extension, which Anthropic's overview page lists with an Install for Cursor link. Claude models picked in Cursor's own model picker are a different thing: Cursor's docs say they draw from its Other Models pool at the model's API price, checked 29 Sep 2026.
